Itinerary

Start/End Point: Langdale YHA Hostel

Our weekend starts and ends at Langdale YHA . High Close Cottage, Loughrigg, Ambleside LA22 9HJ

Nestled in the hills of the beautiful Lake District, we start the weekend in true Sisters In The Wild style, sharing skills and tips outside, before loading up the next morning to begin our overnight adventure. We'll ride around 15 - 20 miles on a mix of on road and off trails, rolling into our camp spot to pitch up and share dinner and a night under the stars. The next day, we’ll ride pack to base to unpack, debrief, and make plans for future adventures with new friends.

About the riding, bikes & guiding

Support & guiding

This weekend is all about learning, building confidence and connecting with new adventure pals. We will ride as small group regrouping at key turns, and expect that we’ll have a range of different confidence and speed levels amongst the group. You’re guide for the weekend will move back and forth amongst the group, and will offer riding tips and tricks at key points for those who are keen to pick up some off-road riding skills. There’s no need to carry your own navigation device, as we’ll be moving together. However, you are welcome to carry one, and we’ll share the route for the weekend in advance. Our intro weekends have a maximum rider: guide ratio of 8:1.

Terrain

The Lake District is one of our favourite places to ride a bike, and we think its the perfect place for accessible gravel riding. Expect a mix of tarmac, off-road cycleways, forest double track, mud, grassy fields and a couple rocky bridleways. We fully expect a range of experiences with off-road riding, and our guides are great at giving riding tips over the weekend and helping our riders to build their confidence.

Climbing

You can expect about 900m of elevation gain over the weekend. There’ll be one or two more significant climbs per day, with some more rolling terrain in between. With our bikes loaded up, there will be some steeper sections where we’ll ALL be taking our bikes for a short walk. But we love this route for how much time we spend away from roads and close up to the big mountain views of Englands biggest peaks.

Daily Distances

We expect to cover about 40 - 50 miles over the weekend, with slightly more riding on Saturday than Sunday. Our guide will adapt the route to the groups pace and weather.

Bikes & Bike hire

Bike hire is not included in this trip, and you’ll need to bring a bike that you are comfortable riding off road (e.g. on dirt, gravel, bridleways etc), and that is in good, safe, working order. A MTB or Gravel bike works great. We'd suggest a minimum of 38mm tyres. Full suspension bikes only if suspension can be locked out.

Bike hire is available locally, and costs around £60 - £70 for the weekend. A good place to start is https://www.countrylaneslakedistrict.co.uk/ , right next to Windermere train station. We recommend hiring one of their hardtail MTB for the weekend.
